about

"We Don't Imagine Anymore" is musician and composer Veslemøy Narvesen's first album under her own name. Already well-established, the young jazz musician has already toured the world and contributed to a number of album recordings with Kongle Trio, Mall Girl, Dafnie and Benjamin Gisli Trio.

Although best known as a drummer, this release demonstrates Veslemøy’s natural ease with other musical aspects and roles. In this solo project, she takes on the roles of songwriter, pianist, guitarist, drummer, producer and arranger. As a musician who has always felt at home at the central core of the music, the album is a natural result of having been in the driver's seat on many musical stages. Narvesen has thus been able to create her very own musical universe, a place where her many inspirations, references, and ideas can unfold freely.
With a strong love for all kinds of genres - and perhaps especially pop, folk, show tunes, classical and jazz - the material on this album is shaped without any inclination to be pigeonholed or categorized. The combination of her clear singer/songwriter influences and the classic sound of a jazz-piano trio is perhaps the clearest feature of the album's character. The sophisticated intersection between challenging, instrumental lines and singable "hooks" creates a new architecture for song that will find its own place in today's alternative pop world.

In addition to being a jazz drummer, Veslemøy has always written and composed, both lyrics and music. The music alternates between having intuitive and improvised ideas as its basis, through to very thoroughly composed material. The songs invite you into a deeply personal space, with lyrics that embrace themes about life's big feelings and questions. It is a search for peace, security and genuineness in the music and oneself – and questions about what happens in the absence of contact with it. Although there are subtle and open considerations at times, the aim is to convey a feeling of closeness, warmth and honesty - something that is particularly explored through the two tracks performed in her own Kristiansand dialect. As a vocalist Narvesen is not focused on technical brilliance, but rather the presenting her own message genuinely with the voice she has. The intention of the music is honest, vulnerable, and uncompromising - a way of creating that she hopes allows the music to find its own life with each individual listener. The production for each song varies from being grand to completely simple and bare performances - a spectrum that reflects the musical diversity Narvesen thrives in, and fearlessly embraces.

As far as the "jazz genre" is concerned, this is not an album that focuses on the instrumental qualities of the participating performers. You could call this «pop songs performed by jazz musicians», music written by a drummer who actually identifies as much more. It is an attempt to capture moods, which for Narvesen is a universal focus in all music. The musicians on the album have each contributed their personal voices and are handpicked on the basis of their ability to let the music be shaped by improvisation and openness. The core cast for the recording was assembled in Øra Studio in Trondheim. A piano trio consisting of pianist Håvard Aufles, double bassist Nicolas Leirtrø and Narvesen on drums and vocals forms the core group of the album. The recordings were made based on song material but have each given way to the organic and the spontaneous. There are also contributions from Tuva Halse (strings), Jakob Leirvik (duet vocals), Eirik Hegdal (saxophone) and Amund Storløkken Åse (vibraphone). The collaboration with technician and co-producer Kyrre Laastad has also provided a haven throughout a process that has allowed itself to take unexpected paths.
